Michigan State Youth Soccer Association offers many different coaching education opportunities.

As a direct member of US Soccer, MSYSA provides coaches with the opportunity to take the 'Grassroots Modules', 'D' and 'C' License courses within the State.  These courses are recommended for professional coaches who plan to coach teams in MSPSP, Director's Academy, Midwest Regional League and the US Youth Soccer National League.

As a member of the United Soccer Coaches (previously NSCAA), MSYSA also provides other coaching education courses, which include 4 v 4, 7 v 7, 9 v 9 & 11 v 11 Modules, Goalkeeper Levels 1 to 3, National & Advanced National Courses.  These courses are recommended for professional and novice coaches who want to coach teams in their local travel leagues & MSPSP.

Other education opportunities include:

  • Online Learning – U6, U8 & U10 Recreational Coaching Modules.
  • MSYSA Coaching Symposium – Unique educational opportunity, which include guest clinicians from around the world to help expose and educate our coaches to different coaching philosophies and practices.
  • In-Service Clinics – Free 3 hour coaching clinics to our member leagues.
  • Resources page – Includes curriculum, lesson plan, video’s, etc.

Which pathway do I choose?  The pathway you choose is ultimately a personal preference, which is based on your level of experience, the age groups you are currently coaching, and the age groups you plan to coach in the future. For these reasons, it is common to take courses from both pathways.  However, our recommendations for coaches are as follows:

Novice Coaches with little or no experience should focus on MSYSA’s U6, U8, U10 or U12 online modules, the United Soccer Coaches 4 v 4 to 11 v 11 Modules and / or U.S. Soccer Grassroots LicenseThese courses are designed to provide parent-coaches working at the recreational/grassroots & select/travel levels with the soccer knowledge and coaching tools necessary to successfully navigate the youth soccer experience. There is no formal assessment in these courses and a playing background is not a requirement.

Coaches with a significant playing and/or coaching experience who are looking at a more professional track should look to complete U.S. Soccer’s Grassroots Courses (4v4, 7v7, 9v9, 11v11) & D License and may also begin the United Soccer Coaches pathway with the National Diploma.

To request a Coaching License Reissue please click here.  Please note a $25.00 fee may apply. Also, due to significant changes in the US Soccer Federation curriculum it is recommended individuals with licenses obtained prior to 2000 be re-certificated. Licenses obtained 2011 or after are on the GotSoccer Coach Profile used to registered for the course.  Click here to pay. Note: If a candidate cannot locate their licenses and MSYSA cannot locate the license, it is recommended that the candidate re-take the course to obtain the license they are seeking.
